TikTok is a fairly new player to the social media market.
After what appears to be a huge investment in marketing, the downloads and active users are simply off-the-charts.
TikTok now has 800 million monthly active users. Users are spending a whopping 52 minutes per day, on average, on the app.
Facebook and Instagram are still in the lead by far, but their growth rate is much, much slower than TikTok.
It remains to be seen who will win in the long run. But one thing is for certain: if you want to build a strong online presence, TikTok really really needs to be a part of it.
What is TikTok
For you out-of-touch readers, I know you might be thinking “what the heck is TikTok?”. Well, I’m here to help.
TikTok is a mobile app that is predominantly used by Gen Z teens.
It allows users to upload short videos, with a maximum 15 seconds in length.
These videos can be joined together to form stories of up to 60 seconds in length.
The videos usually involve some kind of music, sometimes with lip-syncing, and other activities such as dancing, or pulling pranks.
There are also challenges which circulate on TikTok which users complete, uploading their version. This has led to some rather stupid things occurring, but generally they’re harmless and fun.
Why grow a TikTok account
Due to the number of users, I think it’s quite obvious why you should grow a TikTok account in 2020.
However, its not just about number of users, it’s also about how active these users are.
TikTok largely has a young, very dedicated audience who spend a lot of time with there eyes on the TikTok app screen. This is a perfect place to grow your presence, get new attention online, and ultimately sell products or make money.
That’s why we suggest three tips to help you grow your TikTok account.
1. Get involved
Unlike some other apps, such as Instagram or Facebook, you can’t just post generic content on TikTok and expect to get followers. Recycled memes generally don’t do well, and in fact often get the user banned.
It’s important to get engaged when using TikTok. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to dance and sing… take a look at how Gary Vaynerchuk does it.
The important part is that you are creating engaging content, and very much being a part of that content in some way.
2. Interact with other users
The number one way to grow your account, when you’re certain you have good content, is to draw attention to it by interacting with other users.
This means liking their videos, and following them.
New social media platforms often benefit from a lot of “follow-for-follow” activity. Everyone is desperate to grab a share of the attention, so often follow back to try make sure you don’t unfollow.
That doesn’t stop you from unfollowing though.
From some simple testing, I was able to grow an account to 100 followers in a single day, just by doing a few sessions of following and unfollowing.
If you don’t have time to do this, there are various tools that can help, for example Instazood.
3. Link your audiences
Finally, if you already have good audiences on other platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, its possible and easy to make them aware of your TikTok account, and vice versa.
We always recommend a couple posts a week, at least in the caption or description area, highlighting your other accounts.
At a guess, I think at least 20% of my TikTok followers also follow me on other channels. It’s not much, but its certainly a boost. And it’s better than nothing.
There is no doubt that TikTok will carry on dominating for the next couple of years.
And there’s no doubt that its relatively easy to grow a popular account, with a little effort.
We’ll all regret it if they do overtake Facebook and Instagram, and we haven’t managed to create a successful account.
To put it simply, its not worth the risk to not try grow an account on TikTok.
